10 Signs You May Not be Drinking Enough Water Through the Day

Mar 01, 2017

One of easiest things that you can do to stay healthy is to consume enough water every day through the day. Your body is made up of 50% water, and all your organs need water to function optimally. From younger looking skin to boosting your metabolism, the benefits of drinking water are many. Despite knowing this, most of us do not consume the recommended 2-3 litres of water every day. One way to make sure you are drinking enough water is to carry a water bottle with you wherever you go.

Your body has different ways of letting you know that it is dehydrated and needs replenishment of fluids. One of the most important things to remember when drinking water is to make sure that your water source gives you clean, purified drinking water.

Watch out for these 10 common signs or symptoms that indicate your body is dehydrated and you need to up your water intake.

Dryness in the mouth

A dry mouth is one of the first and the most obvious signs that your body is not getting enough water. It’s not only the insides of your mouth that can be parched and super dry but also your lips and throat. Make sure you tank up on a lot of water because water lubricates the mucus membranes in your mouth and throat, and keeps your mouth moist by producing saliva. S$

It is really tempting to reach out for an aerated drink when you’re thirsty, but steer clear of it because aerated drinks contain high sugar, sodium, and caffeine, which can cause chronic dehydration. Instead, try to consume around 2-3 litres of water every day.

Skin breakouts

Wondering why your face seems suddenly prone to zits? It could be because your body is not getting enough water. Water flushes out toxins from your body and decreases the concentration of oil in your skin. Being hydrated will make your skin look healthier and less prone to breakouts. So, make sure you sip on clean drinking water throughout the day.

Headaches

Do you get headaches very often? A common cause of headaches is the lack of water in your body. When you don’t drink enough water, your body will try to preserve and reabsorb water from all your tissues to compensate for the lack of fluid intake. Your brain tissue also loses some of its moisture and shrinks, pulling away from the skull. This triggers the pain receptors and causes a headache.

The lack of water in your body causes the volume of blood to drop, which reduces the amount of oxygen making its way to the brain. This causes the blood vessels in the brain to dilate, leading to swelling and inflammation and worsens your headache.

Dark coloured urine

Dark coloured urine is a definite sign that you are not drinking enough water. When you don’t drink enough water, the kidneys excrete a higher concentration of waste products in the urine, which results in darker urine. Clear or light coloured urine indicates that your water consumption is adequate and your body is well-hydrated.

Fatigue

Do you find yourself reaching out for a cup of coffee or tea every time you are tired or low on energy? Stop doing it right now—coffee or tea severely dehydrates your body. This causes your blood volume to decrease, and your heart has to work harder to push nutrients and oxygen through the body. Instead, have a glass of water and feel your energy levels go up.

Joint pain

Your joints also need water to function properly. Water provides lubrication for the joints, allowing two bones to slide over each other as the joint moves. When the body doesn’t have enough water, it damages the cartilage cells. If you suffer from joint pain, make sure you are consuming enough water on a daily basis. Keeping your body hydrated ensures that your joints can absorb the shock of sudden movements.

Premature ageing

One of the easiest ways to prevent ageing is by drinking ample water every single day. This not only restores the elasticity of your skin, but also helps your cells to regenerate. If your skin isn’t well-hydrated, it leads to wrinkles, fine lines, loose skin and other signs of aging.

Weight gain

Trying to lose weight? Make sure that you’re drinking enough water because most times we confuse thirst for hunger and end up eating unnecessarily. If you feel hungry, first grab a glass of water before having a snack and wait for 10-15 minutes to see if the hunger subsides. If you’re still hungry, then it is time for you to eat.

Constipation

Is constipation making your life miserable? Dehydration can lead to harder stools. If your body is not hydrated, it absorbs water from all parts of your body including your colon. Your large intestine needs a sufficient amount of water to pass stools easily. The lack of water can make it difficult to pass stools thus leading to constipation. Make sure you consume enough water and have a diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables.

If you’re drinking enough water and still suffering from constipation, then you need to check with your doctor and figure out what could be causing it.

Urinary tract infection

Not drinking an adequate amount of water also makes you more prone to urinary tract infections. When your body is dehydrated, your kidneys and bladder will try to stretch what little water is present for as long as possible. This means that you tend to urinate less frequently. Without a constant stream of urine to flush them out, bacteria have more time to multiply inside your urethra and bladder.

One of the signs that you might be getting a urinary tract infection is the colour of your urine. If your urine is a darker shade of yellow, then you need to guzzle more water.  Try having 2-3 litres of water every day.
