10 Lifestyle Tips to Keep Your Liver Healthy Even If You Drink

Apr 24, 2017

It’s quite common in the current social setup to have a couple of drinks at parties and social gatherings. While some of us can get away with a drink or two at most, some people like to go all out. Whether or not you remember any events from the previous night, you can keep these lifestyle tips in mind so that your liver stays strong.

1. Drink plenty of water

While this one is an absolute no-brainer, many of us tend to overlook this and forget to drink the necessary amount of water. Ideally, you need to drink at least twice the amount of water when compared to beer and wine. Make sure you drink more water when you consume hard liquor. Also, it’s essential that you drink purified water. In addition to keeping your liver healthy, water also hydrates your body. It improves brain function and makes you feel fresh as well.

2. Eat lots of grapefruits

Grapefruits are high in anti-oxidants and vitamin C. They’re known to enhance the natural cleansing ability of your liver. Also, help boost the production of detoxifying enzymes in your liver. Make sure you have freshly cut grapefruit or freshly squeezed grapefruit juice for best results.

3. Drink green tea

Green tea is known for its wonderful anti-oxidant effects. It’s high in catechins, which are known to assist liver functioning. However, do not overdo it as it tends to have a diuretic effect. It can be countered by having sufficient amounts of purified water after a cup of green tea. Also, avoid having green tea immediately after consuming alcohol as it can have a dehydrating effect.

4. Eat plenty of leafy vegetables

Green leafy vegetables are the best liver detoxifiers available. They can be eaten raw, juiced or cooked. The chlorophyll in these leaves absorbs toxins in our bloodstream, thereby easing the pressure on the liver. They are also known to neutralize chemicals, pesticides, and heavy metals, acting as a great protective mechanism. Bitter greens help in the increased production of bile, which transports waste from the blood and other organs to the liver.

5. Consume cold-pressed organic oils

Cold-pressed oils are good for the liver when used in moderate quantities. The lipid content in these oils acts as a base that absorbs and remove harmful waste from the body. It reduces the stress on the liver. Among cold-pressed oils, olive oil and flaxseed oil are the recommended choices.

6. Eat vitamin C rich foods

Foods that are rich in vitamin C aid the synthesis of toxic material in the bloodstream into something that’s water soluble, thereby facilitating easy expulsion of the waste from the body. Additionally, drinking freshly squeezed lime or lemon juice early in the morning will help your liver prep up for a tough day.

7. Turmeric and garlic

Both turmeric and garlic are known to activate the liver enzymes, which facilitate better and faster synthesis of waste from your body.

8. Do not mix drinks

A common mistake is when people mix their alcohol. While a large quantity of a single drink is understandably hard work for the liver, the mixing of drinks makes it worse. Each kind of liquor is processed differently in the liver. Therefore, mixing alcohol makes it difficult for your liver to synthesize and to flush it out of your system. Later, this leads to a hangover.

9. Go easy on the pills

If you wake up with a hangover the morning after your drinking session, don’t head for the pill right away. These pills not only have an adverse reaction to the alcohol content in your body, but they also put undue pressure on your overworked liver. Abuse of pills and alcohol can lead to liver cirrhosis.

10. Reduce your consumption of alcohol

The simplest way to keep your liver in good shape is to quit alcohol altogether or at least reduce the consumption. Having alcohol way too regularly can cause significant damage to your liver.

So take the necessary precautions even if you enjoy your drinks. Exercise on a regular basis as it’ll help your liver stay in great shape. Don’t forget to enrich your diet with healthy fruits, vegetables, meat and daily recommended intake of water.
