10 must-know haircare tips everyone should know
Apr 19, 2017
Our hair plays a major role in determining our appearance. Neat and luscious hair is a sign of health and wellbeing. At the same time, hair problems such as dandruff and split ends can make you look unkempt and unhygienic. Keeping a few simple tips in mind can go a long way in maintaining your hair.
Choose a hair wash schedule based on your hair type
You may feel that washing your hair on a daily basis will keep it squeaky clean. However, it’ll strip your hair of its natural oils. Wash your hair sparingly and use a high-quality shampoo that’s ideal for your hair type. Shampoo your hair at least twice a week. Use a thick and creamy shampoo if you have dry hair and a clear shampoo if you have oily hair.
Given your busy schedule, you often rush through your conditioning routine. Deep conditioning your hair every once in a while, adds lustre and volume to your hair. Once you’ve washed your hair with shampoo, squeeze out the extra water. Now take a generous dollop of conditioner and apply throughout your hair, right from the roots to the tips. Run a wide-toothed comb through your hair and fasten it with a clip. Wash the conditioner off within an hour and enjoy soft, bouncy hair.
Use silk pillow covers
A silk pillow provides a static-free surface for the hair and minimises friction, resulting in lesser tangles and breakage of hair. As the hair is now smooth and tangle-free, you need not spend much time brushing or using styling products to tame the frizz.
Before shampooing rinse your hair with vinegar once every month. This kind of treatment will help get rid of dandruff, and other impurities present on your scalp. It also makes your hair look shiny and attractive. Add one part of organic apple cider vinegar to three parts of warm water. Pour the mixture over your hair and let it sit for about ten minutes. Then rinse and wash your hair as normal.
Always air dry
Hair does not react well to high temperatures. Hence, blow drying your hair it a strict no-no. The best way to dry your tresses is to wrap them up in a cotton T-shirt after you get out of the shower to soak out the water. Once your hair is mildly wet, use a wide tooth comb to brush out tangles. Lock in the moisture with an organic leave-in conditioner, and you’re set.
Don't brush your hair too much
While brushing your hair does stimulate the follicles and promote growth, brushing your hair too roughly and too often leads to breakage and split ends. Limit yourself to brushing your hair not more than twice a day.
Get a trim
The best way to avoid split ends is to trim your hair regularly. What’s better? You can do it yourself! Cut the split ends about a quarter of an inch above the point of splitting. If this seems like too much work, visit the salon every three months, and get your locks trimmed by a professional.
Style your hair without damaging it
Repeated styling using heat can put a lot of stress on your hair. Avoid hair straighteners, curling tongs, and crimpers that use heat to change the way your hair looks. If this seems too difficult, make it an occasional treat, not a daily habit. Moreover, using rubber bands to pull back your hair will make your hair prone to damage by getting caught, thereby ripping it out of the follicle. Try simple hairstyles like a loose ponytail or chignon that require very few hair products.
Avoid chemical-based hair treatments
Dyeing and treating your hair with chemical products takes away its natural shine and beauty. If you do dye your hair due to greying, keep a sufficient interval between each colouring session. Taking a break from dying for a few months is healthy for your hair.
Add lean protein, whole grains, fruits and green vegetables to your diet. It supplies your hair with the right amount of vitamins. A healthy diet leads to stronger hair that looks and feels amazing. Hydrate yourself adequately as drinking water often adds to the vitality of your hair.
