10 Tips from Ayurveda That Will Improve Your Overall Health!

Ayurveda is an ancient system of illness prevention and treatment, which says that maintaining a balance between body and mind is possible by following a healthy lifestyle. Read on to learn the 10 tips recommended by Ayurveda that can improve your health and help you stay active.

1.Oil your body on a regular basis

Massaging your body with oil is not only relaxing but it also improves the texture of your skin and makes it soft and supple. It also improves the quality of your sleep. The best time to apply oil is in the morning before you have a bath. Having a shower in warm water will open the pores on your skin and will allow the oil to penetrate more effectively. Sesame oil or coconut oil is known to be beneficial to the skin.

2.Eat freshly cooked food every day

Freshly cooked food is not only nutritious but also easy to digest. Fresh food is a better alternative than processed food because processed food contains excessive sugar, salt, and preservatives that are not good for your body. Also, avoid heating your food in the microwave since it removes the moisture and goodness of food. Instead of heat your food on the stove or hob.

3.Practice meditation for at least 30 minutes every day

Meditation on a daily basis is known to reduce stress and in turn, reduces the cortisol levels in your body. This not only gives you peace of mind but also helps cure your other ailments and helps you lose weight. Meditation includes breathing exercises and even yoga. With our fast paced lives, meditation allows us to slow down and introspect on our daily lives.

4.Your heaviest and largest meal must be your lunch

According to Ayurveda, your biggest and heaviest meal must be your lunch because the sun is at its highest point (from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM) and hence the digestive fire is strongest. This means that your breakfast and dinner meals must be smaller portions as compared to your lunch.

5.Get a good night’s sleep every single day

A fixed sleep routine is absolutely essential for a healthy mind and body. Disturbed sleep can mess up your health and can cause an imbalance of all your doshas (balancing energies). It is recommended that you do not have any tea or coffee before bedtime. Also, it is recommended that you have a quick shower or wash before you head to bed as it will calm you down. Try meditating or praying before you sleep as it will calm your mind and help you sleep well. Avoid sleeping during the day or noon as this will disrupt your sleep at night.

6.Laughter is the best medicine

Did you know that laughing out loud is good for health? Studies have proved that laughter calms your mind, releases feel-good hormones known as endorphins, and stimulates blood circulation. So, go ahead crack silly jokes with your friends, watch a funny movie or go a stand-up comedy night with your friends. You’ll feel relaxed, ecstatic and happy.

7.Drink warm water and ginger tea to improve digestion

Sipping on warm water throughout the day improves digestion and also speeds up your metabolism. Ginger tea is known to be good for digestion since it increases Agni or the digestive fire in the body. Start off your day with a cup of ginger tea in the morning and later increase it to 2 to 4 cups a day.

8.Drink a glass of water (room temperature) as soon as you wake up

It is important to drink a glass of water as soon as we wake up because our body is in a state of fasting while we are asleep, and the water will hydrate our body and promote easy bowel movement as well once we wake up.

9.Chew your food thoroughly before you swallow

Ayurveda says that you must chew your food till is almost liquefied before you swallow it. Wondering why? This is because digestive enzymes are produced by salivary glands and they help in breaking down the food. Also, chewing for a longer time means that you take a long time to eat and hence the tendency to overeat is less and your stomach also has the time to signal to your stomach that you’re full.

10.Eat in Silence

Yes, we know this is not always possible. It is hard to get away from friends, colleagues or partners, but eating in silence is a whole new experience and it is definitely worth trying. Eating in silence makes you appreciate and savour your food and enjoy every morsel. It also reduces the chances of overeating since you are completely focused on your meal.
