12 Fruits that contain high amount of pesticides that you should avoid

Apr 27, 2017

It no longer remains a surprise that organically grown produce is also causing health hazards. Today there is a growing concern about the excessive use of pesticides while growing fruits and vegetables. Most of the fruits that we eat today will show a good degree of pesticide contamination when put through lab tests. Pesticides are no less than carcinogens and can cause many health issues like skin conditions, birth defects, neurological disorders and more. While this raises the most common question of what is safe for consumption, let us go through the list of fruits that have been found to contain the maximum percentage of pesticide.

Cherries

While this is going to break a lot of hearts, cherries are known to contain a good deposit of pesticides. This popular fruit used to decorate cakes and icings should now be consumed with caution. While cherries are known to keep off cancer, consumption of pesticide contaminated cherries can be a cause for cancer itself!

Oranges

There is no wonder in the fact that oranges have also been detected with good amounts of residual pesticide and strictly fall under the list of fruits to avoid. The citrus fruit is grown with a heavy use of imazalil, a pesticide known to have carcinogenic properties.

Strawberries

Strawberries too are no exception, when it comes to the presence of residual pesticide. Strawberry is a favourite not just with kids and children but also with adults. But the presence of pesticide makes it unfit for all.

Grapes

Most people think that washing grapes under running water wash away all the dirt and grime. But the fact is that pesticides do not get washed away. In fact, the presence of pesticides in grapes is known to cause serious health conditions which may include tumours as well.

Apples

Most people don't peel the outer skin of apple because of its anti-oxidising properties and essential nutrients. But apple skin contains residual deposits of pesticides, which again makes the fruit unfit for consumption.

Pears

The problem with pears remains the same as that of apple. The skin of the fruit contains large residues of pesticides which again cannot be washed away by washing the fruit with water. Pears is known for its nutrient-rich properties, but the addition to pesticides adds it to the list of fruits to avoid.

Raspberries

After strawberries and cherries, raspberries fall under the fruits that are heavy with pesticides. While raspberries usually grow well, both organic and chemical pesticides are used to aid the growth of the fruit. Though chemical pesticides have far-reaching effects on health, the organic pesticides are harmful as well.

Peaches

Peaches are also added to the list of fruits that contain pesticides. Studies have found as many as twenty-five different pesticides in peaches making it unfit for consumption.

Nectarines

The nectarines have also been found to contain huge amounts of pesticides. While the domestic nectarines have been detected with pesticides, the imported have as many as thirty-three different kinds of pesticides.

Plum

Plum is a widely-loved fruit known for its nutrient rich properties. Even this fruit does not escape the use of pesticides and poses a variety of health risks when consumed.

Watermelon

Watermelon can quench your thirst, but not the pesticides that are left as residual content in the fruit. The most easily available summer fruit contains large proportions of pesticides and therefore is one you should avoid eating.

Blueberries

Yes! This superfood poses many health risks because of large quantities of residual pesticides that it contains. Blueberries had been omitted from the list until recently where studies have shown that most blueberries are “unfit to consume” because of high amounts of pesticides.

While we binge on fruits and vegetables for our health, the over-use of pesticides not only make them unfit for consumption but also causes several health hazards as well.
