6 Easy Ways to Remove Pesticides from Your Fruits and Vegetables!

How healthy is the apple you just purchased? You’ll be surprised to know that your fruits and vegetables aren’t as healthy as you may think. Unless you’re buying exclusively organic produce or growing your own, you should be aware that your fruits and vegetables contain chemicals from various pesticides and insecticides.

What can you do? The only option is to wash your fruits and vegetables thoroughly. But washing them only with water isn’t enough to get rid of the pesticides. These harmful elements remain in your food no matter how much you wash them with tap water. While these pesticides might be good for the farmers to keep pests away from their produce, it’s certainly not good for your health.

Here are some easy ways to remove pesticides from fruits and vegetables.

1) Salt Water solution

One of the best ways to remove pesticides from farm produce is to use salt water solution to clean them. Mix two teaspoons of salt with four cups of warm water and stir it with a spoon till the salt dissolves. Once the water cools down, soak the fruits and vegetables in it for 30-40 minutes. This method isn’t applicable in the case of fragile fruits like berries. In that case, use cold water and rinse them properly.

2) Turmeric solution

Turmeric is known for its antiseptic qualities. It contains an antioxidant curcumin that is known to kill various microorganisms. Add a teaspoon of turmeric powder to 4 cups of warm water and allow it to dissolve. Soak the vegetables for about 10 minutes and then rinse with plain water to get rid of the contaminants.

3) Vinegar trick

You can also use vinegar to wash off pesticides from fruits and vegetables. Mix 1 part of vinegar with 4 parts of water. Soak the produce in this solution for about 15 minutes. Then rinse them with plain water. Use organic vinegar for better results. If you don’t have vinegar at home, you can also use lemon juice for the purpose.

4) DIY homemade vegetable spray

If you don’t have the time to soak and rinse vegetables, you can just prepare a spray on your own with natural ingredients to remove pesticides. Mix a teaspoon of lemon juice with 2 teaspoons of baking soda in a cup of water and mix everything well. Fill it with a spray bottle and use it frequently. Spray it on the fruits and vegetables and allow it to stay for 5-10 minutes. Rinse with clean water.

5) Cold water rinse and scrub

Cold water washing can remove up to 75-80% of the pesticides from your food. Make sure you use purified water for the purpose. Use a soft scrubbing brush to wash the fruits and vegetables. It’ll also help you get rid of the wax that’s applied to make fruits look shiny.

6) Blanching

Boiling isn’t suitable for some vegetables. That’s why blanching seems to be the best option to remove pesticides from vegetables. Don’t apply it to fruits. Boil enough water in a bowl and turn off the heat. Soak the vegetables in it for 5-8 minutes and once the water becomes lukewarm, take them out. It’s one of the safest ways to get rid of pesticides.
