Pregnancy is the best time to eat, sleep and be merry. While you are not expected to get everything right from day one, here are a few of the most common mistakes that women make during pregnancy:
Whether you were a physically active person before pregnancy or not, exercising during your pregnancy can be great for both you and your baby. You do not need to go overboard and indulge in strenuous workouts. Light to medium exercise can help promote blood circulation, relieve stress, ensure healthy baby growth. Easy yoga asanas are highly recommended for the wellbeing of the child growing inside you. Also, regular walks out in nature can put you in a good mood and keep you energised.
Improper sleeping habits
According to Dr Kathryn Lee, PhD and a professor of nursing at the University of California, a pregnant woman needs nine to ten hours of sleep to revive her energy and cope with the onslaught of hormonal changes. Poor sleeping habits during pregnancy can take a toll on your energy levels during labour and delivery. Get as much sleep as you can during your pregnancy. Once your baby is out in this world, it’s going to be a while before you get a full night of uninterrupted sleep.
Stressing over weight gain
Being weight conscious has become a trend among women off late. But stressing out about weight gain during pregnancy is frivolous. Increased weight is a sign of the proper growth of your baby inside your womb. You can easily work on reducing your six to eight months after delivering your baby. For now, keep stress at bay and enjoy wholesome meals that make you happy and keep your little one healthy.
Give into your cravings during pregnancy. It is not a crime. While it is important to limit your sugar intake, avoiding comfort foods can be a mistake during pregnancy. Don’t stress over a handful of your favourite snack as this can make to upset and can affect your hormonal levels. So, have a mini burger every once in a while. Doubling your food intake
Your food needs are different from those of your baby’s. After all, your baby is not even a quarter of your size. Eating for two must be avoided. As a rule, consume only 300 calories more than your normal calorie intake and drink adequate amounts of water to stay hydrated. Eating for two can cause a lot of health problem both during and after pregnancy.
Poor emotional health
Pregnancy can be a time of emotional turmoil. You are entering a new phase of life and can have your share of uncertainties and fears that put you on the edge. Moreover, mood swings are common during pregnancy. Maintain a good emotional balance by using meditation to keep stress away. Ensure that you have a strong emotional support to keep you motivated.
Opting for a C-section
Don’t let the fear of labour pain make you opt for a C-section. Many women choose to undergo a C-section thinking it is an easier method. But this is a common misconception. C-section has long-term side effects such as lower back and abdominal pains. Furthermore, in the short-term, you will need to go through a longer period of recovery and difficulty in feeding the baby.
