Dehydration occurs when your body is losing more water as compared to your water consumption. Our body is constantly losing water in the form of sweat, urine, and stools. So it is essential that you drink clean and pure water every single day. Check out the 8 common signs which show that your body is dehydrated.
1) Headaches and lightheadedness
One of the most common signs of dehydration is headaches and dizziness. When your body is dehydrated, the amount of fluid surrounding your brain decreases. This fluid is what protects your brain from mild bumps and movement. Lack of water in the body also decreases the flow of oxygen and blood to the brain, which could result in migraines and trigger other types of headaches.
2) Dry mouth and bad breath
Suffering from bad breath? You should check your water intake. When you don’t consume enough water your body produces less saliva and this could lead to the growth of odour causing bacteria in your mouth. What’s more? Lack of water dries up the mucus membranes and also causes a dry feeling in your mouth. So, make sure you have the requisite amount of water on a daily basis.
3) Constipation and heartburn
The main cause of constipation is dehydration. Drinking enough water lubricates the digestive tract and the digestive system and ensures that your bowel movements are regular and pain-free. If you’re suffering from diarrhoea or vomiting, make sure you drink ample water to replenish the lost water from your body. Loss of fluid increases the chance of dehydration so make sure your body is well-hydrated at all times.

The next time you have a craving for potato chips or chocolate, drink a glass of water or have fruits that have high water content. Fruits like strawberries and watermelons have high water content and will satiate your sweet craving.
5) High blood pressure
Dehydration or lack of water increases the sodium content in the blood, makes the blood thicker and also causes slow blood flow. All these factors increase the probability of you getting high blood pressure. Ensure that you at least 2 to 3 litres of water every day.
6) High cholesterol
When your body is dehydrated it will retain any fluid or water that is available in the body. So, if you are having sugary aerated drinks or caffeinated drinks your body is going to absorb it, which will result in higher cholesterol levels. Also, it is very important to remember that even while you’re fasting you should sip on some water from time to time to keep your cholesterol level in check. Drinking water is the easiest thing you can do to keep your cholesterol under control.
7) Joint pain
Water present in your body lubricates the joints and prevents friction and discomfort when you’re doing strenuous activities or any other unexpected movement like jumping or tripping and falling down. Since the body’s cartilage is composed of nearly 80% water, it is very important to stay hydrated in order to prevent joint pain.
8) Dark yellow or brown coloured urine
The colour of your urine is the biggest indicator of whether you’re drinking enough water or not. If your urine is dark yellow or brown you need to buck up, and drastically increase your intake of water. Water not only flushes out toxins but also keeps your renal system functioning smoothly. Ideally, your urine should be colourless and clear. So make sure you drink around 12 glasses of water every day.
