Jun 07, 2017
Your body is composed of 70% water and the majority of your blood and cells are made of water as well. You need at least 2 to 3 litres of water every day for all your organs to function optimally. We’ve compiled 9 signs you need to look out for that shows that you’re not drinking enough water.
1) Your mouth feels dry
The mucous membranes in your throat and mouth feel dry when you don’t drink enough water. Make sure you tank up on enough water to lubricate the mucous membranes. This will keep your mouth moist with saliva.
2) Your skin is dry
Does your skin feel terribly dry or do you feel that you are not sweating at all? This could be because your body is dehydrated and it is not getting enough water. Increase your intake of water to prevent this.
3) You feel thirsty all the time
Does your tongue feel like sandpaper and your mouth feel super dry? This can happen to you especially after a hangover because alcohol severely dehydrates your body. And your body is craving for water.
4) Eyes feel dry
When you don’t drink enough water, it causes your eyes to become dry and bloodshot. Your tear ducts dry up when you don’t drink enough water. This is very harmful especially if you wear contacts on a daily basis.
5) Joint pain
Lack of adequate water means that your bones don’t have enough lubrication when they grind against each other and this can cause pain and discomfort. Drinking enough water means that your joints can absorb the shock of sudden movements such as jumping, sprinting and also if you fall in an awkward position.
6) Your muscle mass decreases
Your muscles are composed of water and if your water consumption is less it means that you’ll have less body mass. Make sure you drink water before, during and after a workout to keep you hydrated and comfortable. It also prevents soreness and inflammation that might happen after working out.
7) You may feel constipated and experience digestive issues
Not drinking enough water can lead to constipation and other digestive problems due to lack of hydration. Without adequate water, the amount and strength of mucus reduces and your stomach acid can do major damage to your insides. This can cause heartburn and digestion.
8) Your urine is yellow or darker in colour
This is a definite sign that your body doesn’t have enough water. When you don’t drink enough water, your body tries to save water and your urine becomes concentrated. This can cause urine infection and other bladder problems. Drink at least 2 to 3 litres of water so that your urine is colourless.
9) Experiencing chronic fatigue
When you don’t drink enough water your blood becomes more concentrated and your heart has to spend more energy to keep the oxygen going throughout the circulatory system. This makes your feel tired all the time.
