Are Plastic or Glass Bottles Safe to Drink From? Find Out the Truth!

Jun 08, 2017

You hear people mention that you shouldn’t be drinking water from a plastic bottle. Then, you also hear that consuming water from a glass bottle is the appropriate way. But who’s going to carry a glass bottle every time or should you avoid plastic bottles completely even when you’re extremely thirsty or dehydrated? You must be totally confused.

Plastic bottles and water

Presently, bottled-water companies are increasingly using BPA-free plastic. However, there are still other harmful chemicals that are laced into the plastic bottles. Over time, when they’re exposed to heat and sit around for a long duration, these toxins tend to seep out and get mixed in the water. Some of the chemicals are endocrine disruptors and affect hormonal growth.

An enormous quantity of water and fossil fuels are used in the manufacture of plastic bottles. Later, they’re filled with water and shipped all across the world. In addition, plastics are not biodegradable either. After consumption, certain toxins can linger in your system for a long duration too.

BPA (bisphenol A) and pregnancy

According to research, it shows that pregnant women who are exposed to high doses of BPA may lead to problems such as LBW (low birth weight).  The chemical BPA is also used in the manufacturing of various plastic products like food containers and in the coating of metal cans and tins that are used to store food. Considering its wide usage, there are varying levels of this compound in the blood. Biphenyl A also behaves like an estrogen-mimicking chemical. This could lead to further health problems such as obesity, diabetes, behavioural and fertility problems.

Release of other harmful chemicals

In hot temperatures, plastic begins to melt. Quite often people store water in plastic bottles and leave them in their cars. The bottles are being directly exposed to the hot sun. This releases a harmful toxin known as dioxin and may lead to the acceleration of breast cancer. The presence of phthalates in plastic could also lead to a reduction in sperm count and cause liver cancer.

Glass bottles and water

Glass will not impart or give out any kind of flavours into the water or liquids. It’s considered as one of the best ways to store liquids, foods, vegetables, and meat. Also, glass is free from chemicals and manufactured from natural elements. When you go out to purchase a glass bottle, check if it’s been tested for cadmium and lead content. You need to make sure that it’s free from both the elements.

Consider buying high-quality glass such as borosilicate. It can withstand both low and high temperatures. Also, it’s lighter and less prone to breakage. On the other hand, traditional or soda lime glass are less expensive and a good option too. However, they don’t offer temperature tolerance or the shatter resistance feature of borosilicate glass.

So, make sure you consume water from a bottle that’s made from high-quality plastic and BPA-free. You could also purchase a stainless steel water bottle. However, on the longer run, it’s best to make it a good habit of drinking water from a glass bottle or container. Stay healthy and make sure that you also opt for a top quality water purifier.
