pH is a measure of the activity of the hydrogen ion (H+) and is reported as the reciprocal of the logarithm of the hydrogen ion activity. Water with pH less than 7 is considered acidic and with pH greater than 7 is considered basic.
The normal range for pH in surface and groundwater sources ranges between 6.5 to 8.5. The pH of pure water is 7 but when pure water is exposed to atmospheric carbon dioxide the pH falls to approximately 5.2. Since the pH of water is closely associated with atmospheric gases, temperature and inorganic elements, it is recommended to test the pH for drinking water before consumption.
Water with a pH less than 6.5 could be acidic, soft, and corrosive. Such water could leach metal ions such as iron, manganese, copper, lead, and zinc from the plumbing fixtures and piping. Which in turn makes the water toxic, making it riskier to consume at home.
