Here's How You Can Have A Pet-Friendly Diwali
Oct 17, 2017
The festival of lights is here and the celebrations are picking up speed day by day. While we might be having so much fun with all the family chatter and get togethers, it might not be the case for our pets.
Animals are easily scared by the loud noises from crackers and huzzahs of cheer. However, you can ensure that your furry friends have 100% Sampurna Suraksha from all the noise and smoke during the high time of Diwali celebrations by following a few steps.
Give them company
Pets need reassurance, especially the little ones. So, try and keep close to them as much as you can. If they are panicking and getting scared, hold them close and calm them down – after a while the little guy might be able to acclimatise to the noise a bit.
Ask people in your society for support
You can meet with other pet owners in your society and get support for special Diwali arrangements in your colony or society. Everyone can decide on a specific place, such as a park or open plot, for bursting crackers. This way pets in homes will not be affected by the celebration and a festive get together of sorts can also happen.
Opt for a cracker-free Diwali
Well, sure. Pets are like our kids and we love them as much. You can decide to have a cracker-free Diwali, like they are doing in Delhi NCR (wink) and save a lot of trouble for your pet, and help the environment as well. Or, you can opt for fancy crackers such as fuljhadis and chakris to set up the festive mood without upsetting your pet.
Keep them happy in a protected room
If your house has a protected room, such as a basement or an inner room where sound penetration is minimal, you can turn it into a play area for your pet. Stock the place with your pet's favourite toys and food, put a litter box in a corner, and you are all set to attend to your guests while your pet has some 'me time'.
You can also install a home air purifier in the room if you are leaving them there for an extended period of time. The air purifier will keep pet dander, hair, and odour from spreading.
Pets are a very important part of our family, they keep every one engaged and happy with their antics and offer loving support when we are feeling down. So, it is important that we care for them likewise, and we do, as is apparent by the things mentioned above.
However, you can go a step further and use this guide to make sure the animals and birds living around you also feel safe during the festivities. Organize a meet to educate and dissuade people from scaring harmless animals with crackers and tricks.
