Is It Safe to Drink Groundwater Without Filtration? Find Out!

May 24, 2017

When it comes to drinking water, you must be very careful about the source. It is often believed that groundwater and well water is safe to drink because it flows underground and doesn’t come in contact with the surface contaminants. But how far is this claim true? Let’s find out.

Groundwater is basically rainwater that gets seeped through the Earth’s surface into the ground, passing through porous rocks, cracks and spaces. The water gets stored underground and wells are drilled through these rock formations to get access to this groundwater.

Even though groundwater is deemed safe to drink, you must have it tested for pollutants and chemicals. It definitely won’t have the surface pollutants but it may have the run-off pollutants in it.

How groundwater gets contaminated?

While surface contamination doesn’t happen in this case, groundwater can be contaminated by irresponsible farming practices or leakage from industrial or domestic storage tanks. Groundwater can get polluted by leakages from septic tank that get easily seeped through the ground right into the stored groundwater. These leakages contain bacteria and other microorganisms that contaminate groundwater.

What does groundwater contain?

Heavy metals

Groundwater contains heavy metals such as mercury, lead and arsenic. The groundwater near mining sites will have more heavy metals than others. If you consume the water without filtration, it may be fatal for your health.

Industrial wastes

Groundwater in the industrial areas may have high amounts of industrial waste. These can be chemicals and other industrial solvents that can be harmful to your health.

Pesticides and insecticides

Groundwater near farms contains pesticides and insecticides. These get mixed with the water due to the runoff from farms. The chemical in these pesticides can be lethal in heavy doses or when consumed for a long time.

Hard water

Groundwater in some areas is unfit for consumption. Hard water isn’t preferable for your daily activities and definitely not for drinking purposes.

Sewage and septic tank leakages can run into groundwater and contaminate it with microorganisms like bacteria and viruses. You can be prone to several water-borne diseases due to this.

There are a number of problems with groundwater consumption. That’s why it’s important that you filter groundwater and then consume it. Boiling water may get rid of a few pollutants but it doesn’t kill all kinds of microorganisms. Water filters also have a few limitations. That’s why RO filters are used everywhere to filter groundwater and make it fit for drinking.

RO water purifiers retain the essential elements in the water and get rid of all kinds of contaminants and pollutants that can be harmful to your health.

So, don’t take a chance with your health. Groundwater also needs filtration and you must use quality RO purification system to ensure that you and your family consumes pure water.
