Is your drinking water tasteless? Here's how you can enhance its taste!
Apr 05, 2017
Yes, we all know that drinking water is tasteless and odourless in its pure form. But have you noticed how the taste of water changes in different areas? In some places, tap water tastes as good as bottled water, but in others, the taste of water isn’t very palatable. So, if pure water is tasteless, does that mean your drinking water isn’t pure? What makes tap water taste different in other locales?
The answer is that apart from the natural minerals present in water, municipal bodies add fluoride to your tap water. This doesn’t mean that your tap water is contaminated. To deal with harmful bacteria in water, some countries use fluoride while others use chlorine. Some municipalities also use chloramine, which is a combination of chlorine and ammonia. It gives a better taste and smell to the tap water.
Sometimes, when you boil regular tap water, it becomes tasteless or tastes weird. Gasses can easily dissolve in water when it’s cold. However, when you heat water, gasses escape and organic compounds break down. This makes water tasteless. You may have also come across water that smells like fish! This fishy smell is caused by naturally occurring organic materials like Barium and Cadmium that are present in water. When tap water is treated with chloramine, chlorine and ammonia react with these metals giving an unwanted fishy odour to drinking water.
Now that we know what makes water taste different or become tasteless, we’re sure you’d like to know how to deal with the problem. Here are a few ways in which you can enhance the taste of your drinking water.
Get a good water purifier
Reverse osmosis (RO) is so far the best way to improve the taste of your drinking water. It reduces the amount of chlorine, total dissolved solids, and organic and inorganic substances present in the water you get from your tap. Invest in a smart RO purifier that will give you high-quality water with a fresh taste. Installing a water purifier is also more economical than purchasing water bottles. Alternatively, you can Rent an RO if you’re on a budget.
Try carbon filtration
Carbon filtration can also help you remove harmful contaminants that cause your drinking water to smell. The most irritating odour in water is that of hydrogen sulphide. It smells like rotten eggs. Active carbon filters effectively reduce the amounts of hydrogen sulphide and other bothersome and smelly contaminants in water.
Whole-house filtration system
Sometimes, hardness also changes the taste of water. Invest in a whole-house filtration system to deal with hard water problems. These devices reduce the hardness of water and improve the taste of water. Some of these systems also effectively reduce the amount of chlorine in water and give you drinkable water throughout the home.
Buy a water filter
There are numerous water filters that help soften tap water. A good quality water filter reduces the number of organic compounds in water and makes water taste better.
Bottled water tastes good but is an expensive and unwise option. You don’t know where your bottled water is coming from. It may taste amazing, but it may have a lot of contaminants present that can make you fall ill. Therefore, choose wisely and try only tested ways to enhance the taste of your drinking water.
