What are you really breathing right now?

Apr 18, 2017

In India, air pollution is a serious issue. The major sources of air pollution are automobile emissions, traffic congestion, fuel adulteration, burning of fuel, wood, and biomass. For example, during the winter and autumn months, in the agricultural fields, a low-cost alternative to mechanical tilling is the burning of large-scale crop residues. It leads to various problems like smog, smoke, and particulate pollution. Currently, India has a low per capita emission of greenhouse gases. However, as a whole, India is the third highest in greenhouse gas emissions after China and the United States. It would be prudent to invest in a Smart Air Purifier to make sure that you’re breathing clean air at home.

What are some of the major causes of air pollution in India?

Emission from automobiles

About 800 to 1000 tonnes of pollutants are released into the air daily across all the major cities of the country.Automobile exhausts are one of the leading causes and add more than 50% to air pollution. The air quality has suffered a major blow as the number of vehicles hit the road every single year. The main sources of emission in automobiles are the exhaust system, fuel tank and carburettor, and crankcase.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) conducted a study on car ownership in India. The study found that by 2040, car ownership will grow by 775 percent. This isn’t surprising. In the last decade, vehicle ownership has nearly tripled. Furthermore, the number of automobiles will grow from the present 20 per 1,000 people to 175.

Pollution caused by industries

In India, there are a plenty of industries that are a major source of air pollution. The main gases released from the factories into the air are Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) and Sulphur Dioxide SO2. A potential health hazard is the emission of harmful dust particles from cement factories. Hot mix plants and stone crushers also pollute the air. The Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) levels at stone-crushing areas are five times above the industrial safety limits. The food and fertilisers industries emit acid vapours. For example, the Taj Mahal and other notable monuments at Fatehpur Sikri complex face serious problems from the air pollutants being released by the Mathura-based petroleum refinery.

Thermal power stations

India has a vast number of power and super thermal power stations. Across the country, there’s a strong presence of coal-powered power stations. The consumption of coal at these thermal plants is in the range of several million tonnes. The main pollutants arising from thermal power stations are SO2, hydrocarbons, and fly ash. The burning of trash and wastes at disposal areas is another source of air pollution. It gets worse when harmful gases and toxins are released into the air with the burning of plastic bags and old rubber tires.

How do we reduce the air pollution levels in India?

– Regular maintenance of automobiles

– Planting more trees and educating the public on nature conservation

– Improvement of the infrastructure for efficient and traffic free transportation

– Finding alternatives or reducing the use of harmful chemicals at industries

– Initiatives to make public transportation easier

In 1981, the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act was passed to regulate air pollution. There have been certain measurable improvements. However, in 2016, India ranked 141 out of 180 countries according to the Environmental Performance Index. In 2015, the National Air Quality Index was launched by the Government of India in partnership with IIT Kanpur.

Currently, in all the major cities across India, the air pollution levels have risen. These levels are not healthy and lead to different kinds of airborne diseases that affect all age groups. It’s worse for the children and older people. You have to take necessary precautions to protect yourself and your family. Install a reliable and high-quality air purifier at home. Along with regular exercise and a healthy diet, you can effectively combat the various kinds of ailments that arise from air pollution.
